While the father and son were talking about planes, Charles drew a little helmet on Snoopy and suddenly had the idea to put him on the doghouse.
He eventually got the idea to turn Snoopy's doghouse into Sopwith Camel the fighter plane when he was flipping through his son's book on World War 1 planes.
In Snoopy's imagination as the flying ace, he is always fighting with The Red Baron. Battle with The Red Baron started in October and lasted for decades in the comic strips. Charles Schulz passed away in Santa Rosa on February 12, , due to complications from colon cancer. Snoopy's last appearance in his final original strip was on February 13, , one day after Charles's passing.
I have been fortunate to draw Charlie Brown and his friends for almost fifty years. It has been the fulfillment of my childhood ambition.
