Everything so far sounds great for a smaller roster — more playing time, and more opportunity which results in better players. However, there are some items that you should be aware of before keeping your roster to 9 or 10 players. It would be nice if all players could commit to every game, but that is highly unlikely.
If you carry a small roster of travel players, you should have some spares that can be called up when needed. As you can probably tell, careful planning is required when having smaller rosters along with the ability to adjust when the unexpected happens. The last thing you want is to have to forfeit a game due to lack of players!
For the most part, when carrying a small roster, players must be flexible and be able to play multiple positions around the field. The last thing you want is to put more strain and dependency on your players to always play at certain positions. If your team lacks depth, you are essentially rolling the dice game in and game out. Imagine losing your catcher and not having anyone to replace them with? This includes pitching as well!
This is especially true in tournaments where you may be expected to play multiple games in a single day. Therefore, when building a small team you have to ensure that you are selecting players who can play multiple positions and pitch when required. The third baseman must be able to make a throw to the catcher when an opposing player is running to home plate. They also must have a strong arm in order to make the long throw to first base before the opposing runner does.
The shortstop is part of the infield and plays a very important role. Tasked with covering the gap between second and third base, the shortstop is positioned in the middle between the two bases. The shortstop must cover second base along with the second baseman, the two positions split responsibilities depending on where the ball is hit in the field.
They are often involved in turning double plays with the second baseman. The shortstop tends to have the most responsibilities and tends to be the team's most versatile player. The second baseman is also a part of the infield, and is positioned in between first and second base.
The main responsibilities of the second baseman include: fielding ground balls hit in their area, catch pop ups, and cover second base along with the shortstop, again depending on where the ball is hit in the infield. The second baseman is often right handed in order to improve their efficiency. The first baseman is the final position part of the core infield, and is positioned a couple feet off the first base bag towards second base.
The primary responsibility over the first baseman is to cover first base, when a ground ball is hit in the infield the majority of the time it's being thrown to first base. The first baseman must also field any ground balls or pop ups hit in their area. First basemen are known for their long reach and extension in order to get outs. The pitcher throws the softball from the center of the diamond known as the pitcher's mound to the catcher. The pitcher's goal is to throw balls within the strike zone of the batter imaginary zone from the batter's shoulders to their knees.
The pitcher must use an underarm motion to throw the ball; after throwing the ball the pitcher then becomes a fielder. They are responsible for catching and fielding ground balls and pop ups within their area and covering first base when the first basemen cannot.
The catcher is positioned directly behind home plate and is responsible for catching each pitch the pitcher makes. The catcher plays in a squatting stance to provide the pitcher with a target within the batter's strike zone. The catcher must also cover home plate when an opposing team's runner is attempting to score, in addition fielding pop flys in foul ball territory and throwing out the runner's attempt to steal a base.
The catcher must be effective at communicating by signalling with the pitcher as to the specific pitch and letting fielders know how many strikes and outs they are. Runners do not have to slide In the event of contact, it is an "Umpire's Judgment"call, as to which player caused the contact. To help avoid contact at the plate, the runner is permitted to touch the strike mat to score in addition to the plate. Similar to the safety 1st base, the catcher would only force an out at home by stepping on the plate itself.
On an overthrow, extra bases are only awarded if the ball goes out of play. Balls that hit the fence along the baselines are in play. If the ball goes out of play, a dead ball is declared and runners are awarded two bases from the last base touched at the time of the throw. The pitcher is not allowed to pitch from more than 5 feet behind that line.
Calls on this are at the umpire's descretion. In the playoffs, a player can only participate and play for one team.
If a player is found playing on two or more teams in the playoffs all games are subject to forfeit. No pump fakes or jukes of any kind are permitted by the pitcher. Pitchers are allowed 1 step in either direction.
Umpires can call a pitch an automatic ball if the pitcher breaks this rule. Once playoff brackets are posted and playoff games are played the tournament seeding will not be changed. If there is an incorrect score posted for your team, the captain is responsible for notifying the league office prior to the playoffs being played. Any player who comes in contact or verbally goes after an umpire will be suspended or removed from the league.
The umpire will keep the game ball in play until it becomes damaged or overly worn. For 16" games a new ball will be used to start each game. Pinch Runners, A batter who reaches 1st base may request a pinch runner if an injury has occurred. The pinch runner will be the last person out in the batting order that is the same sex of the person requesting. If you know in advance that your team is going to forfeit a game, we encourage you to call our office so as to help us schedule your opponent a game however this does not mean that your team will not receive the loss as a forfeit.
Head to head result s. Least amount of forfeits. Overall run differential run max per game. Least number of forfeits. Teams may bat as many batters as they would like. Any late arriving player must be placed at the end of the batting order. Teams must take an out in the batting spot of injured or early-leaving player.

Each consequent homerun will result in an automatic out of the batter with all runners remaining where they are. Any foul ball that hits the trees is immediately ruled foul. The ball is live if it hits any light posts. If the ball hits a tree branches or trunk , a dead ball will be called.
If it hits a tree and comes back into play, a ground rule double will be awarded. If a ball hits any part of a tree and carries over the fence it is a homerun. If the ball gets caught in any of these items, call the ball dead and award a ground rule double to the batter.
Use your best judgment if the obstruction has no impact on the play. It gets too dark too see whether the ball hits the tree or not so we call all balls that go through that tree a ground rule double to make it easy on everyone.
Fields 10, 11 and 12 located just south of Division. If a ball rolls, flies or bounces onto the path to the right of this cone in fair territory, it is an automatic single. If a ball rolls, flies or bounces onto the path to the left of the cone, it is a ground rule double.
If this occurs, call a ground rule double. If the ball hits the tree or branches in fair territory and comes back into play it will be ruled a ground rule double.
If the ball hits the tree and goes over the fence in fair territory it will be a home run. If the ball hits the tree in fair territory and proceeds foul it will be ruled a dead ball.
